Hi everyone. There is a Freedom Writer Teacher in Indianapolis who needs our help! She is actually to the point where they are proceeding to actually fire her for the same stuff that happened to us last year. This is a 27-year veteran teacher who does not deserve this. I just contacted her husband (she is exhausted!) and hopefully will hear back about what I/we can do to help, since we have had some experience with some of this. Here are some articles if you are interested:

The fact that teachers are getting in trouble over this book is ridiculous. The only reason there is an obsession over this book is that it is not “classic literature.” These people probably do not cry over The Color Purple, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and Catcher in the Rye. The thought that a teacher can be fired for presenting any book to his/her students is absurd.
This is a case where it will be hard for her to keep her job. She went against orders from the school to pull the books out, which was stupid on her part... Of all people she should have known not to keep the book out there.
Agreed, BUT, when a 27-year veteran is actually FIRED over something that did not put students in any sort of danger, I have to wonder what is REALLY going on. It's a book..NOT pornography, as some in Howell wanted people to believe, but a book, with good messages and real stories.
My only problem is she knew this book was a hot button issue. Why didn't she pull the book out right away?
I say they putta let her continue teaching. Starting over with teaching is a big deal.
I don't disagree on the point that she probably should have pulled the book right away, but from my standpoint and I know where she was coming from, it is really difficult to rip a book out of a kid's hand who is actually reading, especially if you have never seen them reading an entire book before. I had a different situation in that most of my students WANTED/LIKED to read. Connie's class was a bunch of kids much like those from room 206. I am not saying that no disciplinary action should have been taken. Ms.Breece put up a bumper sticker a few years ago, got three days suspension and that was put in her permanent record. Doesn't having the punishment fit the crime sound like something that makes sense? Firing a 27-year veteran teacher for teaching, even though it was something the administration didn't like, but that wasn't something that was putting the kids in danger, doesn't sound like a fitting punishment!
